Litchfield County Farmhouse

This 19th-century farmhouse in Litchfield County, Connecticut had become a patchwork of additions—each generation leaving its mark until the original structure was faint. By the time our Brooklyn clients acquired the property in 2019, the residence lacked both a formal sense of arrival and any clear connection to its pastoral setting. We were charged with restoring the home's 19th-century character while creating spaces suited to life for a modern family.
We began by uncovering the home's original structure. The front facade’s historic dignity was recovered by replacing an incongruous bay window with a new porch and stoop. On the south facade, a new bay window was introduced to provide morning light and landscape views in an intimate sitting room. Inside, we restored the central hallway and crafted a period-correct stair, while integrating distinct features: a hidden bar and a double parlor with views of the eastern pond. Modern function and historical proportion are balanced within the new kitchen and pantry to accommodate both daily life and large gatherings.
The farmhouse is now positioned naturally within its landscape, its 19th-century character reclaimed. What was once a collection of disparate additions has been transformed into a unified home that honors its agricultural origins while beginning its next chapter as a family retreat.
